We could make out the lights coming from the mansion only when we were within fifty yards of the edge of the forest. Muffled sounds of voices came from ahead as well but they seemed to be much further away due to the natural camouflage of the forest. The thick wall of trees was very effective at blocking out all hint of the mansion beyond. Private lands they may have been with signs warning people from trespassing but there seemed to be little chance of people actually making it to the centre of the forest even if they did wander in.
As we neared the edge I felt a huge surge of relief. There was no real reason to be apprehensive of the woods but I could feel the irrational fear of the dark crawling all over my back. The stories that Lloyd had been spinning as we made our way back had made me feel very different towards the whole lifeline that I was a part of. As the details of what had been taking place over the years were revealed I found myself reacting in much the same way that Lloyd had when he had been telling me, I could feel a deep, surging pride filling me about everything that had gone on and I knew that everything that I had been told was true. The reality of the life that was ahead of me was now laid bare for me to see and I knew that I wanted to make everyone proud, knew that I was going to be dedicated to what I had to do.
The more I felt the need to push my chest out and stride with real purpose, the more I realised that the creeping fear was coming from the same knowledge of my life. The knowledge of what was lined up against me, that the monster under the bed was real, was magnifying my fear of the dark woods so the sights and sounds of the mansion made me feel a sudden surge of relief.
We finally burst through the tree line quite near to the south east side of the house. Our path had been reasonably straight through the woods despite the dark and the fun and games of the terrain. We were both breathing hard as we entered the clearing and I could make out lots of people rushing around the front of the house carrying torches. I could just make out that Mike was in the centre of the throng, calling out orders to everyone. As I took in more details of what was going on I noticed that torchlight was flashing through from the tree line, intermittently showing the locations of at least thirty others. Had something happened? Was this a search party? Lloyd stood still, catching his breath slightly and taking in the details of what was going on ahead of us. He seemed to understand as much as I did about the huge deployment of staff.
